Academic Standing

Academic Probation

A student whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 at the end of a Fall or Spring semester for which the student is enrolled will be placed on Academic Probation. A student on Academic Probation is notified of this status through NCTC email as well as on both official and unofficial NCTC transcripts. Students on Probation will also need to meet with an Advisor/Success Coach to enroll in their next semester of classes, and are added to the Academic Reset Canvas course which offers informational modules regarding campus resources, success strategies, advising/coaching guidance, and more.

A student will remain on Academic Probation if the student’s semester GPA exceeds 2.0 but the cumulative GPA is below 2.0. If at any time a student’s cumulative GPA is above 2.0, then the student will subsequently be released from Academic Probation.

A student on Academic Suspension from another college or university (as noted on the student’s official transcript) will be required to submit an appeal to the NCTC Admissions Office in order to be eligible for enrollment. If approved for enrollment, this student will automatically be placed on Academic Probation status at NCTC, and therefore MUST earn a GPA of at least 2.0 in the first semester at NCTC in order to avoid moving to Academic Suspension status.

Academic Suspension

A student who is currently on Academic Probation status will be placed on Academic Suspension status if their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 at the end of the next Fall or Spring semester of enrollment, and the term GPA for that Fall or Spring semester is also below 2.0.

A student placed on Academic Suspension is not allowed to enroll in the next long semester of intended enrollment unless a Suspension Appeal is completed by the stated deadlines and approved. (The Suspension Appeal forms for both Academic Suspension and Financial Aid Suspension is located in MyNCTC.) Students approved for an Academic Suspension Appeal will be assigned a Success Coach, be limited in the number of hours in which they can enroll, and have other requirements during the appeal semester such as successfully completing the Academic Recovery Canvas course and meeting with a Success Coach throughout the semester.

A student on Academic Suspension is notified of this status through Canvas communication, NCTC student and personal email, as well as a notation on the transcript and on the student’s MyNCTC dashboard.

A student placed on Academic Suspension status whose appeal has been denied or who does not appeal but selects to not enroll for the next semester(s), will have a Registration Hold placed on the student’s account and must meet with a Success Coach in order to re-enroll for the next eligible semester. Also, this student will automatically be placed on Academic Probation status upon re-enrollment at NCTC and MUST earn a term GPA of at least 2.0 in the first semester back in order to avoid returning to Academic Suspension status.

A student who is coming to NCTC on Academic Suspension from another college or university (as noted on the student’s official transcript) will be required to submit an appeal to the NCTC Admissions Office in order to be eligible for enrollment. If approved for enrollment, the student will automatically be placed on Academic Probation status at NCTC, and therefore MUST earn a GPA of at least 2.0 in the first semester at NCTC in order to avoid moving to Academic Suspension status.

Permanent Academic Suspension

NCTC does not permanently suspend students for poor academic performance; however, the number of times a student has been placed on Probation, Suspension, and/or received an approved appeal will be taken into account for any future appeals and could impact approval to re-enroll.
