Surgical Technology, AAS

The Surgical Technology program is a two-year degree program that prepares the student to assume the responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist.

Surgical Technologists participate in all aspects of preparing and monitoring instruments and procedures in the sterile operating room environment. The courses are taught in the classroom, the Surgical Technology lab, and at clinical sites throughout the NCTC service area.

The program is nationally accredited by the CAAHEP.

Surgical Technologists may obtain professional certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) by graduating from a CAAHEP accredited program and passing a national certification examination. They may then use the designation Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

The main part of NCTC’s Surgical Technology program runs from August to August and has a maximum capacity of 24 students a year. Students are required to complete prerequisites;  BIOL 2401   - Human Anatomy and Physiology I, BIOL 2402   - Human Anatomy and Physiology II, BIOL 2420   - Microbiology - For Pre-Nursing or Health Science Majors, PSYC 2314   - Lifespan Growth & Development, and HITT 1305   - Medical Terminology. All prerequisites must be completed prior to Fall Start with a grade of “C” or better.

Criminal background checks and drug screens will be conducted on all students and may disqualify individuals from the program. Titer evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B and communicable diseases according to CDC guidelines is required. American Heart Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR certification is required. A physical exam by a private physician or another qualified provider is required. Documentation of personal health insurance is required. There is also a strict attendance policy in place for classes and clinicals. NCTC Allied Health programs have a non-tobacco policy.

Surgical Technology program fees may include but not limited to the following:

Estimated program costs are between $6,500 to $10,000.

Admission Process

The applicant must:

  • Fill out an online application for admission to NCTC.
    • Complete the admissions process into NCTC.
    • Contact financial aid at 940-498-6294 if financial assistance is needed.
    • Contact the Admissions Office in Gainesville for specific international student requirements if an international student.
    • A social security number is required.
  • Register and complete pre-requisite courses.
    • Meet with your advisor and begin registering for the pre- requisite and general academic courses if needed.
    • See the Surgical Technology Degree Requirements.
    • All health sciences courses (Anatomy & Physiology I, II, Microbiology, Medical Terminology, Lifespan Growth and Development) must be completed before the start of the surgical technology program and must achieve a “C” or better.
  • Attend an Information Session to obtain additional information about the Surgical Technology Program.
    • These are done either LIVE at a scheduled time once a semester or recorded so you can view when you want to.
  • Apply for the Surgical Technology Program.
    • Log in to MyNCTC and complete the ONLINE application.
    • Paper applications are not accepted.
    • Complete as much as possible of the application initially.
    • Your application will remain open until all items are attached (pre-requisite grades and titer proof).
    • The application is not complete nor will be considered until all supporting documents are received.
  • Applicants applying for reentry into program must meet current cycle requirements including current degree plan, and application requirements.
    • Students may re-enter the program one time only.
    • Any previous surgical courses must be repeated to guarantee proper retention of knowledge and skills learned.
  • Acceptance into the program is limited to a max of 24 students.
    • Acceptance is based on a point system.
    • Students scoring the highest total admission points will be admitted to the AAS Surgical Technology program.
    • Applicants will be ranked according to the total priority points.
    • Remaining candidates will be listed as alternates.

      • Selection will be made by July 1 of the start year.
  • Students will be notified by e-mail regarding their status: acceptance, alternate or rejection.
  • Students who are admitted into the program must also complete the following before orientation:
    • Must pass a criminal background check.
      • Criminal background checks will be completed on all students upon acceptance to the program.

Surgical Technology Program 2025-2026

  • The following histories will disqualify an individual from consideration for clinical rotations and therefore admissions to the program:
    • Felony convictions,
    • Misdemeanor convictions or felony deferred adjudications involving crimes againstpersons (personal or sexual abuse),
    • Misdemeanor convictions related to moral turpitude (prostitution,public lewdness/exposure, etc.
    • Felony deferred adjudications for the sale, possession, distribution, or transfer ofnarcotics or controlled substances,
    • Registered sex offenders.
  • Must pass a physical examination from their private physician, NP, PA.
  • Must be CPR certified for the American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support.
  • Must show proof of health insurance (Student insurance policies are available through school.)
  • Must provide physical documentation of completed immunization and titer requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years old on the first day of class.

The overall program goal is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The curriculum uses the three areas of learning acquisition arranged in a hierarchy of simple to complex

Programmatic Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the physical, interpersonal, and ethical aspects of the perioperative environment.
  • Discuss basic concepts of surgical pharmacology and anesthesia.
  • Identify basic concepts of technological sciences.
  • Demonstrate patient care concepts.

Modality of Program

The Surgical Technology classes are face-to-face, online and at clinical sites.

NOTICE: The Surgical Technology Program reserves the right to change the curriculum and program requirements as deemed necessary for maintenance of high quality education.

Progression

Students must make a “C” or better in all classroom and clinical courses to progress within the Surgical Technology Program. Students not meeting this standard will be unable to continue in the program.

Associate of Applied Science Degree Graduation Requirements

A minimum of 60 semester hours is required for graduation with an Associate of Applied Science Degree.

Students who have completed the NCTC Certificate in Surgical Technology may, with completion of the additional 26 required academic hours, apply to NCTC to be awarded an AAS in Surgical Technology. Academic courses may be taken before, during, or after the certificate portion of the program. Degree-seeking students must pass all sections of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI).
