All NCTC Cosmetology program curriculum is governed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) and helps prepare graduates to take the associated state TDLR examinations.

Two Cosmetology Level 1 Workforce Certificates are available:

  • Cosmetology
  • Esthetics

Students may pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree upon completion of the Cosmetology Certificate.

To enroll in any Cosmetology Certificate program, student must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age by state licensure testing date
  • Apply to NCTC and complete the college orientation
  • Complete the required Cosmetology department paperwork
  • Complete financial aid forms if applicable
  • Provide applicable transcripts

A Barber Occupational Skills Award is also available through this department once a Cosmetology Operator license is acquired.

Students enrolled in any of these programs must be able to:

  • Stand for long periods of time without a break
  • Use hands to complete manual dexterity skills
  • Study in a room where noise may be present
  • Accept and be willing to work with students and clients of all demographics and characteristics
  • Must not be allergic to chemicals or scents
  • Submit a record of criminal history to TDLR prior to enrolling

Associate of Applied Science Degree

The Cosmetology Associate of Applied Science Degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills directly applicable to a career in Cosmetology.

Career Concentrations

The program has two concentrations from which students may choose.

  • The first concentration is a focus on cosmetology.
  • The second concentration is a focus on barbering, allowing students the opportunity to become dual-licensed. Once the student receives a Cosmetology Operator license, he or she may apply for this concentration as a pathway to receive their Barber license.

All of the courses in the certificate program transfer directly into the degree. All fees associated with the certificate are applicable to the AAS degree as well.

Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Cosmetology, students will be able to:

  • Provide safe and appropriate care to clients receiving hair, skin, or nail services;
  • Use effective communication skills with clients;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in business and ethical practices relating to the field of Cosmetology;
