Patient Care Technician Non-Credit, OSA

A health-related work-based learning experience that provides the student with the training and knowledge for a rewarding career in the hospital setting taking care of patients.

To prepare patient care technicians with the knowledge, skills and abilities essential for the provision of basic care to residents in long-term care facilities. After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Provide basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff
  • Comply with workplace safety regulations and uphold professional responsibility by adhering to HIPAA, chain of command, Patient’s Bill of Rights, and operational standards while practicing within the defined scope of patient care technician practice
  • Implement infection control using standard and transmission-based precautions
  • Perform and follow quality control related to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-waived procedures including specimen collection and transport; phlebotomy punctures, collection, and transport while adhering to patient safety considerations
  • Prepare, apply and preform 3-lead, 5-lead, and 12-lead EKG’s; identify and respond to signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary compromise; artifacts; and recognize and report dysrhythmias
